Why do I need such a powerful computer for VR headsets?

Learn why high-end GPUs and CPUs are essential for VR headsets to deliver smooth, lifelike graphics without lag or frame drops.

Running professional-grade VR and mixed reality is a real-time 3D challenge. Your computer must render high-resolution, stereoscopic images for both eyes, keep  latency low, and process sensors (tracking, eye/hand/depth) without dropping frames. A stronger PC helps you maintain clarity, comfort, and realism, especially with demanding enterprise content.

Virtual and mixed reality headsets can either be tethered to a computer or untethered. In the case of untethered devices, VR users can walk around freely without being attached to a computer. However, this comes with the caveat of significantly lower-quality graphics and visual fidelity.

Varjo headsets have a best-in-class resolution (measured in pixels per degree) and refresh rate, allowing VR and XR to be experienced in photorealistic quality. To run virtual and mixed reality content with that level of quality, a high-performance Graphical Processing Unit (GPU) and Central Processing Unit (CPU) are needed so the VR and XR experience is flawless and without jitters and frame drops.

Varjo headsets are compatible with a broad range of PCs, laptops, and workstations with NVIDIA GPUs. We partner with dozens of industry-leading manufacturers to test and certify their computers for optimal performance.
