This is a full walkthrough for setting up your XR-4 Series headset. If you have previously used an older version of the XR-4 Series headset on the same computer, the Quick setup guide will guide you about the necessary steps to take your new headset into use.
Before you start
You will need:
- A commercial Varjo Account to use the XR-4 Series headset.
- Varjo Base Pro license (optional). If you need the most powerful and advanced tools for mixed reality and research applications, you can purchase a Varjo Base Pro license in Varjo Account Portal. Read more about the features that are included in the license.
Setup your headset
Follow these steps to set up your headset:

1. Log into Varjo Account Portal To get started, log into Varjo Account Portal. If you don’t have a Varjo Account yet, you can create a Varjo Account. |
2. Download Varjo Base from Varjo Account Portal Varjo Base is the software used to run your headset. It contains everything you need to use the headset on a Windows computer, including advanced presentation and developer tools. Note that Varjo Base 4.13 or later is required to use XR-4 Series (2026). If you have an older version of Varjo Base, please download and install the latest version. When you install Varjo Base for the first time, you may be prompted to also install Microsoft Visual C++ 2019 X64 Minimum Runtime. |
3. Start Varjo Base Varjo Base will help you set up your headset. You can also follow along the setup steps on this page. When you start Varjo Base for the first time, we will run a system check to confirm that your computer is compatible with the headset. See System requirements for more information. |
4. Log into Varjo Base with your Varjo Account Depending on your installed licenses, you may be asked to log in. In Varjo Base, log in with your Varjo Account to start setup. Note that your computer needs to be connected to the internet to log in.
5. Select your headset model When you start Varjo Base for the first time, it will automatically open the first-time user guide to help you through the setup process. You can open the guide at any time in Settings > Support > Run setup. Select your headset model to view detailed instructions on how to connect your headset. |
6. Connect your headset When you connect the headset to your computer for the first time, Windows will recognize the headset as a new USB device and install the appropriate drivers.
Please refer to the FAQ section if you are unable to connect the headset to your computer. |
7. Update your headset firmware if prompted Varjo Base will automatically check that your headset firmware is up to date. If the firmware is not compatible with the current version of Varjo Base, you will be prompted to update the firmware.
8. Activate Varjo Base Pro for your headset if prompted Varjo Base will automatically check if there are any available Varjo Base Pro licenses in your organization.
