Release notes – Varjo Base 4.16 Release candidate

Varjo Base, Release candidate version 4.16

June 9, 2026
Supported headset models: XR-4 Series

Occlusion settings

Occlusion combines real and virtual worlds by utilizing depth sensing capabilities. It allows you to show real-world elements such as tools, hands, or people in the virtual world, creating a more seamless and immersive experience.

This release introduces two brand new occlusion modes alongside a reorganization of existing settings:

    • All objects in range: Ranged depth occlusion is now available directly in Varjo Base for the first time, even when the application itself does not have support for it. Previously, this capability was only accessible via APIs.
    • People (Beta): A new people occlusion mode that lets human figures in the real world appear within the virtual environment. This feature is currently in beta due to ongoing work on segmentation quality and the absence of depth-based occlusion for people.
    • Hands: Hand occlusion has been moved to this new unified Occlusion settings section.

Varjo Command-line interface out of Beta

The command-line interface is now out of beta. In addition to the previously available commands, you can now toggle on the gaze dot and pointer, switch between virtual reality and real-world views, set Varjo as the active OpenXR runtime, reset Varjo inside-out tracking, and trigger automatic autofocus camera calibration.

New settings for occlusion and masking are also accessible via the command-line interface, including full control over occlusion mode and range, as well as detailed per-mask configuration for masking.

Additionally, we fixed an issue where running a settings reset through the command-line interface did not restore all settings to their default values.

Other release contents

Varjo inside-out tracking:

  • Improved room recognition to reduce the frequency of room setup prompts by automatically attempting to recognize the room. The setup prompt only appears when the headset is worn and recognition fails.
  • Improved tracking stability between sessions to keep virtual and mixed reality content correctly aligned when resuming use after the headset has been put away or Varjo Base has been shut down.
  • Implemented automatic tracking drift correction, ensuring that positional accuracy remains stable across long-term use.
  • Set Varjo inside-out tracking as the default tracking method for new installations.
  • Fixed an issue where a "No environmental features detected" error occurred immediately after completing room setup.

SteamVR™ Tracking:

  • Fixed an issue where the view would sometimes briefly freeze when using SteamVR™ Tracking in Unity-based applications.

Varjo Controllers:

  • Improved controller tracking, reducing detection delay when re-entering the field of view and improving tracking near the edge areas of the camera's field of view.

Varjo hand tracking:

  • Improved thumb joint detection, resulting in more natural-looking hands.

Masking:

  • Fixed an issue where masking settings were not included when exporting the Varjo Base configuration file.
  • Fixed an issue where masking was not applied in Varjo Workspace when application background was enabled.
  • Fixed an issue where the status bar showed an incorrect number of applied masks.

Pop-up view:

  • Improved the pop-up view behavior to open on the same monitor as Varjo Base instead of always defaulting to the primary monitor.
  • Fixed an issue where the pop-up view spanned across two monitors when moved between two monitors.
  • Fixed issues with the pop-up view where using the show desktop shortcut caused unexpected resizing, and dragging across monitors distorted its proportions.

Other improvements and bug fixes:

  • Visual and usability polish for the login and license activation screens.

  • Updated system requirements in XR-4 Series System check.

  • Fixed an issue where Varjo Base sometimes displayed a partial Applications panel and switching to the real-world view did not function correctly.

  • Fixed an issue where Varjo Base would open off-screen when a previously connected monitor was no longer available.

  • Fixed an issue where Chroma key and Override origin and direction settings were not imported correctly from a Varjo Base configuration file.

Developer tools and APIs:

  • OpenXR:

    • Added support for XR_EXT_spatial_anchor_persistence, allowing virtual objects to retain their real-world positions across sessions when using Varjo inside-out tracking.

Known issues:

  • OpenXR:
    • Varjo Base does not show a warning when using the Simulate option in the Analytics window that Varjo OpenXR runtime is not selected as the default runtime, which can cause unpredictable system behavior.
The latest NVIDIA drivers verified to be compatible with this release are:

XR-4 Series
- NVIDIA Game Ready Driver 596.36
