Release notes – Varjo Base 4.13

Varjo Base, release version 4.13

October 23, 2025
Supported headset models: XR-4 Series, XR-3, VR-3, and Varjo Aero

Note that Varjo Base version 4.13 is not compatible with XR-3, VR-3, and Varjo
Aero that have an active Offline subscription. We are working on fixing the
issue. You can continue using the headsets with older versions of Varjo Base.

Note: This release includes a firmware update for the XR-4 Series headsets. The firmware is updated the next time the headset is connected.

All listed items concern the XR-4 Series only unless otherwise mentioned.

Refreshed XR-4 Series

As we introduce the updated XR-4 Series, we bring support for them also to Varjo Base. This release adds full support for the 2026 versions of the XR-4 Series headsets, including product-specific settings, firmware, and updated product images. Furthermore, we introduce a new dark theme option for Varjo Base application UI to celebrate the new products. Read more about the new XR-4 Series and Setting up XR-4 Series.

Night mode varjobase_pro_tag_30_15 (2)

Night mode is a feature that allows you to transform your mixed reality environment to resemble nighttime. Read more about Using Night mode.

Varjo hand tracking out of Beta

Varjo hand tracking is now out of Beta. We have improved tracking stability, recovery from tracking lost situations, and continuity of hand tracking. Gesture detection is now more reliable, and hand tracking is smoother.

Additionally, you can now run Varjo hand tracking with an integrated Intel iGPU to reduce CPU load, which is likely to improve overall performance. Read more about Using hand tracking.

Offline package activation

Offline packages can now be purchased and activated directly through the Varjo Account Portal and Varjo Base, and no longer require activation by Varjo Support. Read more about the Offline package for XR-4 Series and Activating Varjo licenses.

Other release contents

Video pass-through:

  • Improved video-pass through colors making them more vivid and creating better contrast which allows for more life-like images, better details and readability, and reduces noise level in darker areas.
  • Introduced Vertical repositioning that allows you to adjust the video pass-through vertical crop when using 90 Hz refresh rate which helps you to see, for example, controls, feet or hand movements that are located low in the field-of-view. (XR-4 Series 2026)

Varjo inside-out tracking:

  • Expanded feature detection to utilize the full field-of-view of the tracking cameras, improving robustness and accuracy in environments that do not have many trackable visual features.

Eye tracking:

  • Fixed an issue where eye tracking data was not recorded unless the Analytics window was open.
  • Fixed an issue where eye tracking was not working for VR-3 headsets.

Varjo Command-line interface (Beta)

  • Added a command for checking the connected headset’s status that includes, for example, connection status, controller status, and mixed reality camera stream states.
  • Added the possibility to adjust the settings for Night mode, Hand occlusion, Vertical repositioning, and Appearance.

Other improvements and bug fixes:

  • Improved the headset restart reliability resulting in less “Headset cameras failed to start.” messages when the headset restarts with a working setup.
  • Introduced a new dark theme for Varjo Base which can be changed in Settings under Appearance.
  • Fixed an issue where Varjo Base was sometimes incorrectly blocking Varjo Base Pro license features even though the headset had an activate license.
  • Fixed an issue where pairing just one Varjo Controller was not possible.
  • Fixed an issue where changing the White balance setting in Varjo Base was not always working correctly.

Developer tools and APIs:

  • All APIs:
    • Reduced the minimum priority assigned to the client process by Varjo System from HIGHEST to ABOVE_NORMAL to avoid undue delays in timing-sensitive Varjo System processing that sometimes led to stuttering.
  • OpenXR:
    • Fixed an issue where XR_REFERENCE_SPACE_TYPE_LOCAL used a calibrated floor-level origin, which is not required for OpenXR seated use cases. The origin is now set relative to the headset's position when you start an application, providing better alignment with the seated position.

Known issues:

  • OpenXR:
    • Varjo Base does not show a warning when using the Simulate option in the Analytics window that Varjo OpenXR runtime is not selected as the default runtime, which can cause unpredictable system behavior.
    • The .../input/palm_ext/pose defined for XR_EXT_palm_pose does not behave correctly when used with XR_EXT_hand_interaction. The palm pose never becomes tracked or valid, due to missing data from hand tracking.
